NDNA offers three services to help you prepare for your next Ofsted nursery inspection.

Get external advice from an independent adviser to increase the confidence of you and your team pre and post visit.

Preparing for your nursery inspection visit

What is included:

  • A visit from a independent adviser with experience of day nurseries and the Ofsted inspection framework to:
    • Review key documentation
    • Observe early years practice
    • Carry out an observation as an Ofsted inspector would
  • A review of your SEF
  • Advice for your staff team about what to expect from an inspection to increase their confidence
  • Feedback and advice to identify your strengths and areas for development using the Ofsted evaluation schedule.

The preparing for inspection visit will support you to:

  • Improve your understanding of the Common Inspection Framework and Early Years Handbook 
  • Review your current practice and identify areas for improvement and next steps
  • Achieve quality measures that may be required to draw down free nursery funding
  • Achieve the best possible inspection judgement by showcasing your practice and demonstrating continual quality improvement.
  • Increase staff confidence in nursery inspections
  • Improve quality practice and outcomes for children through self-reflective practice
  • Gain confidence in completing your SEF and ability to demonstrate the strengths of your nursery to the inspector.

Half day 
Includes a half day visit to observe practice and verbal feedback from the adviser. Only suitable for smaller nurseries with 50 places or fewer. This includes a written report with an action plan.

Full day 
Includes a full day site visit to allow the inspector more time to observe practice in your setting and talk to practitioners. The adviser will provide verbal feedback based on their observations and a short written report. Ideal for nurseries with more than 50 places.

Post Inspection Support


NDNA offers support through independent adviser visits for nurseries following an Ofsted inspection too. 

What is included:

  • Training and support from an independent adviser who has experience of day nurseries and the Common Inspection Framework.
  • Advice about your last inspection visit, any issues or concerns and the recommended action points.

If required

  • A review of your SEF to advise how it can be strengthened following your inspection
  • Support for the manager and your staff team after the inspection visit
  • Guidance on the Ofsted appeals process 
  • Support informing and communicating with parents
  • Guidance on how to meet the actions and recommendations from Ofsted
  • Next steps - impact from a 'requires improvement' or 'inadequate' judgement
  • Marketing support following a downgrade.

Self Evaluation Form (SEF) Review


Your (SEF) is an integral part of the inspection process and can support your Ofsted judgement

It is imperative that your SEF is as strong as possible and highlights the excellent practice, care and education that you provide to your nursery. 

As part of NDNA's SEF Review service, an external adviser will review your SEF to ensure you are completing the form effectively. Following the review, you will receive a short written report highlighting your strengths and areas for development.
