EYFS guidance: Children Thinking Mathematically - factsheet
This factsheet focuses on children’s mathematical development, which is explored in the area of learning and development entitled Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (PSRN) in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (DCSF, 2008).

The EYFS recognises that creativity and critical thinking are important in all areas of learning and are as integral to mathematics as they are to painting or dance. Reflecting on the narratives and examples of children’s mathematics throughout this factsheet, it is clear that creativity plays a significant role in mathematical thinking and understanding.

The four themes of the EYFS, A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning and Development, underpin everything that practitioners do with children from birth to five. They also underpin every chapter in this factsheet.
