NDNA Ofsted Support: Preparing your nursery for inspection

NDNA offers two services to help you prepare for your next Ofsted nursery inspection.

Get external advice from an independent adviser to increase the confidence of you and your team pre and post visit.

Preparing for your nursery inspection visit

  • A visit from an independent adviser with strong experience of the nursery sector and the Ofsted inspection framework to::
    • Observe early years practice
    • Review key documentation
    • Carry out a joint observation.
  • Advice for your staff team about what to expect from an inspection to increase their confidence
  • Feedback and advice to identify your strengths and areas for development.

The preparing for inspection visit will support you to:

  • Evaluate your practice against the Early Years Inspection Handbook 2019 
  • Achieve the best possible inspection judgement by showcasing your practice and demonstrating continual quality improvement
  • Set action plans for areas of development with immediate feedback on the day and a full written report following the visit
  • Prepare your whole team for an inspection visit
  • Gain confidence in your ability to demonstrate your quality practice to an inspector
  • Improve quality practice and outcomes for children through self-reflective practice
  • Achieve quality measures that may be required to draw down free nursery funding.

Half day
Half day sessions can be tailored to look at specific areas of practice:

  • Focus one particular age group or room/space within your nursery
  • Focus on a specific area of practice
  • Help you develop an action plan following a negative Ofsted inspection
  • Provide general advice on practice
  • Provide an overview of your current practice.

Full day
A full day visit will follow the structure of an inspection visit and includes:

  • A learning walk
  • Observations of practice in each room
  • Assessment of practice against the EIF 2019
  • A joint observation
  • Meeting with the manager
  • Discussions with staff and parents
  • Verbal feedback at the end of the visit
  • Written report outlining key strengths and areas of development.

Post inspection support

Practitioners in a meeting NDNA offers support through independent adviser visits for nurseries following a negative inspection experience. 

This support visit can be tailored to meet your specific requirements. We can offer:

  • A review of the inspection findings
  • Review of practice
  • Planning and creating an action plan
  • Advice on practice or statutory requirements
  • Review of your evaluation procedures to advise how they can be strengthened following your inspection
  • Support for the manager and your staff team after the inspection visit
  • Guidance on the Ofsted appeals process
  • Support informing and communicating with parents
  • Guidance on how to meet the actions and recommendations from Ofsted
  • Next steps - impact from a 'requires improvement' or 'inadequate' judgement
  • Marketing support following a downgrade
  • Guidance on supporting staff well-being.
